Fearless Adventuring 101

Do you like white water rafting? I do!

Take a large inflatable raft that holds 8-10 people, a skilled river guide to keep the raft moving on a safe course, a fast moving river with some challenging rapids, and scenery on both sides that takes your breath away ... and you have the recipe for an incredibly wonderful time, or for disaster.

What makes the difference? Preparation. This means that you:

  • Write down exactly where you're going and when you expect to arrive so that people know where to find you if you need help.
  • Have a clear plan of how you'll get there plus the right tools and equipment for the journey.
  • Understand and obey the rules of safe travel, wear your life jacket at all times and follow the instructions of your guide.
  • Carry along survival supplies and a first aid kit for emergencies.
  • Have the good sense to stay away from known hazards!

Doesn't this sound a lot like life? Let me tell you a story:

Several years ago on a white water rafting trip with some friends down the Flathead River in Montana, I experienced the unexpected.

We hit what is called a "hole": a short, steep drop-off caused by a large rock underneath the surface. A big hole not seen in time can easily flip a raft. That's exactly what happened.

One minute I was rockin' and rollin', having the time of my life. The next I was flailing in the Flathead in water the temperature of just-melted snow.

Did I have a moment of close communion with my Creator? You bet I did! It's hard to imagine until we're in situations like this just how powerless we really are against the forces of nature. I was, to say the least, extremely humbled by the experience. Fortunately, because of good preparation, neither I nor anyone else in the group suffered serious injury or loss of life in this mishap.

I remember oh so well the final words of instruction we received before starting our journey:

"In the very unlikely event that you and the raft should ever become separated, keep your feet pointed downstream so you can push off from the rocks, and go with the flow until you are rescued."

Sometimes "going with the flow" of life may mean running a few rapids on your backside. Are you prepared for the ride?

Fearless Weeding 101

Ah...gardening is so much fun. Nothing like a little early morning weeding to start the day off right.

RIGHT???

I can almost see that strange look on your face, stretched halfway between surprise and derision. Yeah, right. Almost as fun as starting off the day with a root canal ...

... Whoa! Who says that what you do first thing in the morning has to be "fun?"

Let me tell 'ya something. There's gold in them there weeds -- gold nuggets of nutrition and wisdom -- abundant and free for the taking. For example:

Did you know that lots of common garden weeds are highly edible? Purslane tastes a bit like spinach. Lambs Quarter tastes great in salads. Even that horrible stuff known as nutgrass has edible tubers. Not only that; weeds are extremely high in nutrients:

And the Italians purposely brought dandelions to America as edible plants! (Can you believe that?)

What about weed wisdom? Did you know that the hardest weeds to pull are those that grow closest to the plants?

Some weeds hide themselves so well beneath the plants' foliage that it's easy to miss them. In time, though, these same weeds do the most damage because their roots become entangled with those of the plants, robbing them of precious light and energy needed for growth. By the time we finally see them for what they are (weeds) it's almost impossible to pull them out without causing at least some temporary injury to the plant.

Habitual negative thinking, dwelling on the hurts of the past, and failing to forgive are just like those darn weeds, aren't they?

Pulling weeds first thing in the morning may not be the most pleasant task, but it sure helps clear my mind of any "weeds" that might have sprung up there overnight.

Besides...who knows...I might even find something out there for breakfast!

Fearless Babysitting 101

Babies! Don't 'ya just love em?

So...innocent. So... cute. So...special. And so... unpredictable!

You know how it goes: Suppose you and your spouse decide to go to a movie one evening. You'll only be gone 3 hours at most. The baby has been fed, changed, and is already asleep when the babysitter arrives.

Should be a "piece of cake" for even the most inexperienced babysitter, right?

Wrong!

I remember all too well what happened to me, the "nervous novice," on my first real babysitting assignment.

"The baby's already asleep so he shouldn't be any problem at all. He'll probably sleep the whole time we're gone. If his diaper needs changing before we get back, just use one of those Pampers (disposable diapers) over there. Don't worry. Everything will be all right. We'll be back by 10PM."

Right.

You can probably guess what happened next. Less than 5 minutes after Mom and Dad walked out the door, the baby woke up and started crying ... and crying ... and crying ...!

Nothing I tried would quiet that baby. Nothing! He cried for almost the entire 3 hours, finally falling asleep (from exhaustion, no doubt) just a few minutes before the parents returned home.

Your "nervous novice" quickly became a nervous wreck!

Oh well ... at least the diaper change went without a hitch, or so I thought.

No one told me that disposable diapers have two sides: an absorbent one and a non-absorbent one.

Guess which side I put next to the baby?? (Yep, the non-absorbent one!)

Fortunately for me, I made that infamous diaper change around 9:30 PM. When the parents walked in the door at 10PM I proudly reported that the baby was asleep, his diaper changed, and of course, he was *no* problem while they were gone.

Did those parents ever ask me to babysit for them again? Nope. It took them months before they could even tell me (with a straight face) what I had done with the diaper change.

Ah...we live and learn. So what's the moral of this story?

Always look at both sides of a situation before you act. If you don't, you could have a real mess (literally) on your hands!
