Give Your Hard Disk a Spring Cleaning

You can significantly extend the life of your hard disk and make programs run faster by performing a simple maintenance task called "defragmentation." Defragmentation rearranges the files on your hard disk so that they are as close to each other as possible. This minimizes the time required to search for and retrieve files, frees up blocks of disk space that previously couldn't be used, and improves your overall system performance. If you have Windows XP, you'll find the Disk Defragmenter utility program in the "Performance and Maintenance" section of your Control Panel. Select the 4th option ("Rearrange items on your hard disk..."). Click "Analyze" to get an evaluation of your current hard disk usage. If defragmentation is recommended, click "Defragment" to start the process. Then go find something else to do for a while. If this is the first time you've run the Disk Defragmenter, you may have quite a long wait! Defragment your hard disk at least once a month to keep it performing at its best. If your hard drive doesn't have to do a lot of unnecessary work finding files, it's much less likely to "crash."
