Fearless Weeding 101

Ah...gardening is so much fun. Nothing like a little early morning weeding to start the day off right.

RIGHT???

I can almost see that strange look on your face, stretched halfway between surprise and derision. Yeah, right. Almost as fun as starting off the day with a root canal ...

... Whoa! Who says that what you do first thing in the morning has to be "fun?"

Let me tell 'ya something. There's gold in them there weeds -- gold nuggets of nutrition and wisdom -- abundant and free for the taking. For example:

Did you know that lots of common garden weeds are highly edible? Purslane tastes a bit like spinach. Lambs Quarter tastes great in salads. Even that horrible stuff known as nutgrass has edible tubers. Not only that; weeds are extremely high in nutrients:

And the Italians purposely brought dandelions to America as edible plants! (Can you believe that?)

What about weed wisdom? Did you know that the hardest weeds to pull are those that grow closest to the plants?

Some weeds hide themselves so well beneath the plants' foliage that it's easy to miss them. In time, though, these same weeds do the most damage because their roots become entangled with those of the plants, robbing them of precious light and energy needed for growth. By the time we finally see them for what they are (weeds) it's almost impossible to pull them out without causing at least some temporary injury to the plant.

Habitual negative thinking, dwelling on the hurts of the past, and failing to forgive are just like those darn weeds, aren't they?

Pulling weeds first thing in the morning may not be the most pleasant task, but it sure helps clear my mind of any "weeds" that might have sprung up there overnight.

Besides...who knows...I might even find something out there for breakfast!

Taking Care of Y-O-U

Did you remember to take care of Y-O-U today?

Y-O-U (Your Own Upkeep) can't be neglected just because there are other (seemingly) more important things to do.

If you neglect Y-O-U, then you'll be doing the same as M-E right now (Mending Everything)!

The body, the mind, the spirit, and our relationships all need regular upkeep to stay in good condition.

Imagine for a moment that you (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) are like a typical American home with a kitchen, living room, dining room, den, bedrooms, one or more bathrooms, and a yard.

In this imaginary home the kitchen, bedroom(s) and bathroom(s) take care of you physically. The den takes care of feeding your mind and entertaining your brain. In the living room you cultivate relationships; and in the dining room you feast upon spiritual things.

Which rooms in your imaginary home get the most use? Which ones are gathering dust? Which rooms get cleaned most often? Least often? Why?

Is the dining room any less important than the kitchen? The kitchen lets you prepare and eat quick meals on the run but the dining room lets you serve others and enjoy what you're eating on a much deeper level.

How about the living room? Is yours just for show or do family, friends and guests gather here frequently to discuss and do things together that really matter? Your living room is a place to *live*. Are you using it to its full potential?

What goes on in the den? Is it a place of learning or mindless entertainment? Do the kids have educational toys to play with? Does the library include good books, audio tapes, videos and dvds that stretch the mind and inspire you to improve? Does the music you listen to, the pictures on the walls, and the knick- knacks on the shelves stimulate greater, nobler, richer thinking or keep you mentally in the slums?

And then there's the yard. Are you letting the grass grow under your feet? Time to get moving!

Without regular upkeep a house quickly falls into disrepair. Without regular upkeep a life, too, quickly fall into disrepair. Health starts to fail. Minds turn to decadence and decay. Relationships break apart with tragic results. Spiritual neglect leads to despair, depression, addiction, even suicide.

It's a lot easier and less costly to take care of Y-O-U (your own upkeep) in at least some small way every day than it is to stop and take care of M-E (mending everything) when things start to fall apart.

You can pay Y-O-U now or you can pay M-E later. The choice is yours.

The Humbling of a Hawk

Recently a young (apparently) inexperienced hawk got himself tangled in the branches of a rosebush right next to our house as he swooped in on what looked like an easy kill. He frantically beat his wings and bashed himself repeatedly against our sunroom window in his desperate attempts to escape.

My husband and I rushed outside to do what we could to help. By the time we got to him he had finally managed to break free and had fallen to the ground in an exhausted heap. Concerned that he might be seriously hurt, my husband put on heavy leather gloves and gently moved towards him, intending to catch him if he was too hurt to move. The hawk quickly got up and half ran-half flew a short distance from us, winding up in a sitting position on our front lawn.

Grateful that he was OK, we watched him for a while and he watched us. What a beautiful, awesome creature! Bruised and badly shaken, he seemed to realize that we had no desire to hurt him. He stayed on the ground for about half an hour, then recovered enough to fly to a low overhanging roof. From there after another rest he finally flew away.

The young hawk was so focused on accomplishing his immediate objective that he failed to look at the bigger picture - and wound up getting himself into a thorny mess. He's lucky the experience didn't cost him his life.

It's important to focus on what we want, but we must be careful not to narrow our vision too much ... or we may wind up like that hawk. Those thorns hurt!

5 Things Anyone Can Do to Become Extraordinarily Successful (and Wealthy)

  1. Make an extraordinarily good first impression so that people remember you in a positive way.
  2. Render extraordinary service. Go the extra mile. Do more than is asked. That alone will set you apart from the rest of the crowd.
  3. Be extraordinarily prompt. Arrive 15-20 minutes early for appointments and meetings. Answer your email and voicemail with extraordinary speed. Watch your prospects turn into extraordinarily loyal customers as a result.
  4. Show extraordinary courtesy. Good manners, soft speech and kind words are in all too short supply nowadays. Let everyone know you have more than enough to go around for all.
  5. Give extraordinary praise and thanks for all you receive. Be extraordinarily diligent in sending a personal "thank you" to each and every person who does you a good turn, no matter how small. Make an extraordinary donation to your church or favorite charity. Keep an attitude of gratitude about you and you'll find yourself working more "in the zone" where you function at extraordinary levels of energy to produce extraordinary results in extraordinarily short periods of time.

Do these 5 things every day, every hour, every minute until they become a habit, and you'll be unstoppable!

Warmly and Positive-ly Yours
